Since being diagnosed over seven months ago, I have been undergoing hormone treatment with the hope that my PSA and testosterone levels drop so they can start radiotherapy treatment. Unfortunately, for the time being, both levels have not dropped (my wife says I am a caveman and thinks my neanderthal instincts are fighting the oestrogen being pumped into my system). As in a previous blog, I mentioned the 'grey zone' and when I was told, that grey zone started to appear again. "What next?" I said to the cancer nurse. Their provisional solution is to increase the dosage and hopefully this will work.
Anyway, given this set back, my daughter was taken into maternity hospital to give birth to my first granddaughter, Juliet.
In the face of the news by the cancer nurse, the timely arrival of this wee beauty has been a much needed boost for us. Amazing the impact a little bundle can have giving us a new lease of life. Distractions are key to taking your mind away from your cancer fight and what better distraction than a baby. I have plenty of 'distraction' or hobbies and interests but the prospect of babysitting and the wee walks with the pram are something my wife and I are looking forward to.
Most blogs forget the carer (my wife) and the impact it has on her. For the past few months she has been totally supportive and solid and 'nursed' me through some difficult days. Now the baby has arrived she now has two babies to look after (haha). But it has changed my perspective as well and making me concentrate more on the baby and less on my own plight. I know I need to strike a balance but cancer support workers are always saying that the more distractions you have the least likely you are to slip into depression (the grey zone) and seeing the joy my wife is having due to Juliet's arrival lifts my own spirits as well.
