'And the Beat Goes On'

Being told you have cancer, to some, can change lifestyles. I have always had a very active lifestyle and since being told, I thought my lifestyle would change dramatically. Not really. What it made me do is start to design my lifestyle more carefully around the treatments but never give up on most of my pre-cancer lifestyle. I have always loved dance music and for years I have been travelling to Ibiza to soak up the club scene and sun. I remember somebody came up to me recently and selfishly said "No Ibiza for you Eddy now that you have cancer!" That was a so called 'friend'. But I still go to Ibiza and returning again this September 2017 to enjoy the island I love. Here's my blog on last years trip....

Even after all these years, waiting to board our flight to Ibiza from Glasgow Airport last year, still conjures up all the excitement of a 10 year old going off into an unknown adventure (Indianna Gemmell). The Air Cabin Crew still look like those wee Japanese dolls toddling up and down the slim passageway and smell like they have just spent a fortune in Frasers sampling every perfume available; sitting next to a couple of caffeine fueled teenagers goggle eyed and high on excitement; and the constant hum of the aircraft and ear popping pressure changes...Captain announces " good morning, we are now approaching Ibiza and the weather is a sunny 32..." Yay...a huge roar from the passengers (more relief that they have eventually made it safely methinks). We have landed. Stepping off the plane into the oven baked air is the first sign that we have arrived and that old Ibiza magic takes over. Even though we are greeted by soor faced customs, we say farewell to the teenagers make our way to our hotel and celebrate with a cool vodka and coke next to the pool. Time to plan our gigs. Monday Guetta, Tuesday Hardwell, Wednesday Axwell & Angrosso and to finish our week off, Kygo. My daughter started traveling with me four years ago and has been coming to the isle ever since. I remember our first time together on the isle. We stayed in a rough 2 star in the middle of San Antonio but we had the best time of our lives. How? The famous phrase is 'eat, sleep, rave, repeat'. I explained to Jodie that this is an old survival rant...eat well (breakfast and tea time especially), sleep for a couple of hours during the afternoon (take time out from getting burned by the hot sun and drinking), rave (get to your pre club and build up to the main events and dance until 5-7 in the morning) and then....repeat. Jodie was surprised how well she survived by that rant and now swears by it. People constantly ask me 'what is it that makes you return?' Its simple. The beat and the people. Once that rhythm and beat kick in, it totally transforms this so called 'normal' guy by injecting an energy I have not found anywhere else in the world. DJ's have that power to lift and drop you at any given time creating a euphoric vibe. The people. The friendliness of the people we meet from the world over adds to that flower power passion where we all join as one through music. Being a bold 62 year old clubber with cancer and intending continuing for the foreseeable future, Ibiza still offers that brand of magic no other place in the world offers. Age does not matter. Attitude matters. Cancer does not matter.
